Set up USPTO Patent Search
Connect this product to claude.ai in two steps. You will need the connector URL(s) below and the same Google or Microsoft account you used to sign in on this site.
Step 1: Add the connector in claude.ai
In claude.ai, open Settings, choose Connectors, and select Add custom connector. Paste the connector URL exactly as shown. Give each connector the name shown here. The "Legal MCPs" prefix marks these as our connectors, not the USPTO's or the SEC's, and keeps them together in your list.
| Name to use in claude.ai | Connector URL |
|---|---|
| Legal MCPs - USPTO Patent Search | https://uspto-patent-search.legal-mcps.ai/mcp |
In claude.ai the connector is added from Settings. The screens below are from a real run; the connector shown is EDGAR Intelligence, and the USPTO connectors are added the same way, one per address listed above.
-
Open the account menu and choose Settings. -
Under Customize, open Connectors, click Add, then Add custom connector. -
Give it a name and paste the connector address, then Continue. -
Leave the detected defaults: Sign in now, and Register automatically. -
No request headers are needed. Click Add. -
The connector is listed but not yet connected (the wording varies). Click Connect to sign in. -
Connect opens the legal-mcps.ai sign-in page. Continue with the Google or Microsoft account you use on this site; Step 2 follows.
Step 2: Authenticate with Google or Microsoft
When claude.ai prompts you to authorize the connector, sign in with Google or Microsoft using the same email address as this account. Access is matched by email, so a different email (even a different identity at the same provider) will not see this account's access.
You will see two pages from legal-mcps.ai before the connector is live. On the first you accept the Terms of Service for the account you signed in with; on the second you allow Claude to call the connector on your behalf. The signed-in address and the exact MCP endpoint are specific to your account and the product you are connecting.
Tip: If authentication reports an expired sign-in, start over from a fresh claude.ai page or a brand-new chat. The "Sign-in expired" message usually means the flow was resumed from a stale tab.
Using ChatGPT instead
The same connectors work in ChatGPT as custom MCP servers (a paid ChatGPT plan with developer mode or connector access is needed; OpenAI controls which plans have it). The name, URL and the sign-in are the same as above; only the dialogs differ.
-
In ChatGPT settings, add a custom MCP server: the same name and URL, Authentication set to OAuth, nothing in the advanced settings. -
Tick "I understand and want to continue", then Create. -
ChatGPT's own connect sheet: click Continue. -
Unless you are already signed in on this site, the sign-in page comes next: Continue with the Google or Microsoft account you use here. -
Then Allow. The return address shown is ChatGPT's. -
The connector appears in the tools menu of a new chat. -
Pick it and ask your question.
